Disney was founded on October 16th, 1923 by brothers Walt and Roy Disney as the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio; it has since expanded into motion pictures, television networks, theme parks, consumer products, and interactive media. As of 1961, Walt Disney Productions had become a wholly-owned division of The Walt Disney Company.

With the company’s unparalleled success came worldwide recognition, and in 1989 the Disney Company was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Disney reigns as one of the most recognized names globally across many industries including cable, animation, motion pictures, consumer products, and theme parks.

It owns highly valuable intellectual property assets that include Marvel Entertainment, Pixar Animation Studios, Lucasfilm, Touchstone Pictures.  It has valuable brands such as ESPN channels, ABC network, A&E Networks, ABC Family, Disney Channel.

In 2005, the Walt Disney Company acquired Pixar for $7.4 billion. Co-founded by Steve Jobs and Edwin Catmull in 1979, it is the world’s most successful animation studio and a pioneer in computer-animated technologies.

The company has made many other notable acquisitions such as the purchase of ABC [1986], Capital Cities/ABC [1996].  In 1994, Disney acquired a majority stake in one of its most significant properties – ESPN (Entertainment and Sports Programming Network).

The Walt Disney Company also owns theme parks, resorts, and cruise ships; it operates under the names of the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.  Disney is a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and a former component of the S&P 500 Index, as well as a traded stock on The New York Stock Exchange.

In 2012, Disney announced plans to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd., the creator of the Star Wars franchise, in a deal worth 4.05 billion dollars in May 2018, The Walt Disney Company announced that it has agreed to acquire 21st Century Fox in an all-stock transaction valued at 52.4 billion dollars [USD].

As of January 2018, the company employed approximately 201,000 employees worldwide and has a market capitalization of approximately 52.5 billion dollars [USD].In December 1994, Disney announced plans to merge with Capital Cities/ABC Inc. in an 80-to-20 stock swap, in which the latter’s shares would be converted into 32 million shares of Disney stock (approximately 37% of the company).

Disney shareholders approved the merger on July 23, 1995; the merger closed one month later on August 26.  Forbes’ 2018 estimate of The Walt Disney Company’s annual revenue is $55.1 billion dollars (USD) and its assets are worth 91 billion dollars (USD).  As of May 2019, The Walt Disney Company has a market capitalization of $271.8 billion dollars (USD).

History of Disney

Walt Disney started as a newspaper boy in Kansas City. When he was fired from it, he decided to go to Hollywood and make a career as a cartoonist. He founded his first company called Laugh-O-Gram Studio. In 1923 he sold it because he could not manage the business well enough. With the money from the sale, he went on to make his own, new company in California which was then called Disney Brother’s Studio. It got its current name in 1986.

Disney ranks third among the most influential entrepreneurs in history, after Bill Gates and Henry Ford. Forbes magazine ranked him as no 3 out of 100 in The World’s Most Powerful People. His net worth is estimated to be over $ 52.5 billion as of March 2013.

Disney runs a network of seven television channels, more than 100 radio stations, and the ABC TV Network reaching 128 million people in total per month. Disney also owns 70% of ESPN’s sports network and 36 newspapers all over the world with 17,000 employees.

Disney is one of the largest movie studios in the world with over $ 38 billion box office receipts as of 2012. The company also owns seven theme parks, resorts, cruise ships, and other entertainment businesses all over the world. Disney-ABC Television Group produces TV content worldwide including shows like Lost, Desperate Housewives, and The Bachelor. Disney was ranked number one in Fortune Magazine’s list of the World’s Most Admired Companies for 2009. The company has made several hundred acquisitions during its long history, some of which are: ABC (1943), National Geographic (1999), Zagat Survey (2010), Lucasfilm (2012).

Walt Disney died at 65 in 1966, but his company is still alive and well. He had a vision for a place where both children and adults can have fun together while being educated at the same time. This has been achieved by the creation of Disney World in Florida. The Walt Disney Company today employs over 190,000 people throughout the world with revenue of over $ 40 billion.
